I finally changed my car cover routine after a buddy called me out

So I've been storing my '68 Mustang in a rented garage for like 5 years now. Always used a basic cotton cover I got at a swap meet. Last month my friend Dave came by and said my cover was trapping moisture against the paint, causing little rust spots near the fender edges. I argued with him but then checked - he was right. I switched to a breathable indoor cover from Covercraft, $160. Now I'm wondering - who else got told their storage method was doing damage and had to fix it? What were you doing wrong?

Cotton covers are a trap for anyone storing a car long term, they hold moisture like a sponge against the metal. Swapped to a multilayer breathable cover on my Camaro after finding surface rust near the quarter panel corners. Have you checked the humidity levels in the garage itself?

Man, I've been there. I used a tarp on my '79 Trans Am for years and wondered why the hood looked like a pizza with pepperoni rust spots.
