Question about keeping a car on a gravel pad behind my uncle's place in Cheyenne
My uncle Ray let me park my 1971 Cutlass on his gravel pad out back in Cheyenne, and for 4 months I just threw a tarp over it and called it done. Then a guy at a swap meet asked to see under the tarp and the dust had worked its way in everywhere, grit in the trim channels, grit down by the cowl, all of it. He handed me a cheap breathable cover and said gravel dust moves way more than folks think, and now I'm wondering what the rest of you do for ground moisture coming up under a car sitting on rock. Do you lay a vapor barrier down first or just leave the pad alone?
Man, Cheyenne wind will shove that grit into every seam whether you cover it or not, so you're not crazy for worrying. I've had good luck laying a sheet of heavy plastic down first, then rolling the car onto it so the moisture stays under the plastic instead of creeping up into the frame. Just make sure the pad drains away from the car or you're trapping water in there worse than leaving it bare.
