Spent 3 hours trying to find a fuel smell in my 66 Mustang and it was the gas cap gasket, a $4 part
I parked my Mustang in the garage last Saturday and kept getting a faint gas smell every time I walked by. I checked every line and fitting under the hood for two hours and found nothing. Pulled the back seat to look at the tank sender and still nothing. Turned out the gasket on the gas cap had dried out and cracked, letting fumes seep out slowly. My dad laughed at me and said he had the same thing happen on his truck in 1985. Has anyone else chased a smell for hours and felt dumb when it was the simplest part?
Been there with my old truck, swore it was a leaky line and it was just the cap not sealing. Gotta love when the fix costs less than the gas in the tank.
