Swapped from a damp garage to a climate controlled unit last winter

I used to just throw a tarp over my '72 Mustang in my dad's damp garage and hope for the best. After finding rust spots on the floor pans last February, I finally rented a 10x20 climate controlled storage unit for $250 a month. Now I run a dehumidifier and check on it every two weeks instead of just ignoring it for months. Anyone else have a rude awakening that forced you to upgrade your storage setup?

Honestly used to think paying for storage was a total waste. Always figured a good car cover and some luck was good enough, my buddy stores his project car outside with just a tarp and seems fine. But after seeing those rust spots on your floor pans, that's exactly the kind of wake up call I needed. Humidity does way more damage than people realize, it seeps into everything. Swapped my Camaro from my uninsulated shed to a proper unit last fall, best decision I ever made for it. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way that cheaping out on storage just costs you more in the long run.

Tarp life is a gamble you always lose eventually. Better to spend a little now than a lot later fixing rust.
