Switched to a regular garage with a dehumidifier instead, saved a ton.

Dude that sucks so bad, I'm sorry. Same thing happened to me with a "climate controlled" unit a couple years ago. My guitars got all warped and I had to sell my Les Paul for half what it was worth. I thought paying extra would keep my stuff safe but the humidity just went wild in there. The guy at the facility said it was my fault for not buying their special insurance, what a joke. Now I just keep my stuff in a dry basement with a cheap dehumidifier from Walmart and it's been fine for years.

Gotta disagree a bit. Climate controlled units can be fine if you check the actual conditions yourself instead of trusting the facility. I've seen too many basements flood or get musty even with a dehumidifier running.

Did your friend use a specific brand of dehumidifier? My buddy had a similar issue and swears by his cheap one from Home Depot.
