Caught myself rinsing food scraps down the garbage disposal for 10 years...
My neighbor at our apartment complex in Austin saw me doing it and said 'you know that goes to a treatment plant that burns methane off, right?' Started composting in a 5 gallon bucket the next day. Anyone else have a 'wait, I'm making it worse' moment about everyday habits?

Honestly I used to think garbage disposals were fine too. "It grinds it up small, what's the problem?" I was dead wrong. Once I actually looked into how much energy and water those treatment plants waste on food scraps it clicked for me. Now I keep a metal bowl on the counter and dump it in the backyard pile every few days.

My compost pile is right next to my shed and I swear it's cut my trash bags down by half. The first week I tried it I was grossed out by the bowl on the counter, but now it's just second nature. Did you have to deal with any smell issues or did yours settle down fast?
