DAE remember thinking home solar was a scam until you actually ran the numbers?
A guy at the gym in Sacramento showed me his 2 year old electric bill, $11 in December, and that made me call a local installer the next day. Now I'm trying to figure out if panels or a heat pump water heater should come first for a house with a 20 year old gas unit.
That December bill is wild, mine dropped to like $14 the first winter and I kept staring at it thinking they messed up. If you go panels first, size the system for the heat pump too, otherwise you're back on the roof in a year adding more. The water heater swap is the easy win though since gas units that old are just burning money, panels just make the math prettier after.
I did the water heater first back in 2019 and it was the best $1,200 I ever spent. My old gas unit was from 1998 and once I swapped it for a heat pump water heater my gas bill went to almost nothing, which made the solar decision way easier later. When I finally did panels in 2021 I sized them for everything at once, the heat pump, the water heater, plus a little extra for an EV down the road. Going too small is the mistake I see people make all the time and then they're paying a crew twice. Get a few quotes and make sure whoever you pick actually runs the numbers on your future electric load, not just last year's usage.
