My compost bin lid broke clean off in a storm last Tuesday.
I ended up using an old plastic storage container lid as a quick fix, but does anyone have a better idea for a sturdy replacement that can handle heavy wind?

That lid lasted through last year's hurricane, didn't it?

Yeah, that "lasted through a hurricane" line from angela_harris really says it all. I read an article about how older plastics were made with different, stronger formulas before some chemicals got regulated. Now a lot of stuff is designed to be lighter and cheaper to make, even if it doesn't hold up as well. It's like the old stuff was built for a lifetime, not just to survive until the next shopping trip.

It's wild how the cheap stuff sometimes outlasts the expensive things we buy. My grandma's old plastic bowl from the 90s is still perfect, but the fancy one I got last year cracked just sitting in the cabinet. Makes you wonder what they were making things out of back then. Maybe we're just paying for the brand name now and not the quality.
