My neighborhood compost bin hit 50 pounds this week

Been tossing scraps in for 4 months. Measured it Tuesday and we diverted 52 pounds from the landfill. Anyone else track their household food waste numbers?

Wait is 50 pounds really that big of a deal? Not trying to be rude but my neighbor's household goes through about 30 pounds of trash per week easy, so 50 pounds over 4 months seems like a drop in the bucket. I mean sure it's good to keep stuff out of the dump, but are we really making a dent or just patting ourselves on the back? Sometimes I wonder if people focus on small stuff like this to avoid thinking about the bigger problem. Like maybe we should be mad at companies that waste tons of food every day instead of measuring our own scraps. Do you really think this kind of tracking changes anything or is it just for your own satisfaction?

Honestly never thought about how this kind of tracking actually changes your grocery buying habits over time. Like once you see 50 pounds of scraps you start noticing all the packaging you bring home too. Had a friend who started buying from bulk bins just to cut down on cardboard and plastic she was throwing away. It's not just about the 50 pounds itself, it's about training your brain to see waste everywhere which makes you push back on stores and brands too. Kinda like how saving 50 bucks makes you mad about bank fees later.
