My neighborhood got 40 more trees last spring, now the difference is obvious

Our block applied for a city grant back in February 2023. They planted 40 native oaks and maples along the main drag. I remember thinking it was pointless, you know, saplings barely taller than my dog. Fast forward to this fall and the canopy is actually casting shade on the sidewalks. My AC bill dropped about 18% compared to last August. The storm drains don't flood as bad either since the roots soak up the rain. But the real shocker came last week when a neighbor from two streets over asked what we did different. Her street still looks like a parking lot. Guess nobody else applied for the grant. Has anyone else seen street tree programs actually work this fast, or did we just get lucky with the species they picked?
