Noticed my neighbor throwing banana peels in the regular trash - here's why that bugs me

I've been composting for about 8 months now at my place in Austin, and I keep seeing people toss food scraps in the garbage can. Food waste in landfills creates methane gas which is way worse for the climate than CO2. My little bin at home processes around 5 pounds of scraps per week and turns it into soil for my garden. If everyone in my neighborhood of 200 houses did it, we could keep over 50,000 pounds of waste out of the landfill each year. Are there real hurdles stopping people from starting a compost pile or is it just a 'not my problem' thing?

50,000 pounds of waste a year from just 200 houses, that is absolutely bonkers to think about! I never realized the math added up that fast with something as simple as banana peels. It makes me want to go knock on my neighbor's door right now and hand them a compost bin.

@karen361 Exactly, imagine if every block did it, the whole city would see a huge change overnight.
