Rain barrel I installed 5 years ago is finally paying off
I was talking to my neighbor Steve the other day, he's been gardening here in Phoenix for 20 years. He said he never bothered with rainwater catchment because he figured it wouldn't make a dent. I showed him my setup, just two 50 gallon barrels under the downspout, and told him I saved about 300 gallons last monsoon season alone. That made him pause, and now he's looking into getting one himself. Anyone else had a simple system that surprised you?

Man I gotta push back here lol. 300 gallons sounds like a lot but think about it - that's barely enough to water a small garden for like two weeks here in Phoenix. For all the hassle of hauling barrels around and cleaning out mosquito larvae every summer, Steve was probably right. Plus if you actually get a real monsoon storm, those 50 gallon barrels fill up in like 10 minutes and then you're just dumping overflow anyway. Feels like a feel-good project more than anything that moves the needle.
