Talked with my aunt about her electric bill last week

She switched to a heat pump water heater two years ago. Said her monthly bill dropped by $45 and she hasn't thought about it since. I was still on gas but that number made me actually call a plumber Monday. Anyone else have a family member who casually convinced them to switch something?

Wait, she said a whole $45 less every single month? That's wild to me, I figured a heat pump water heater would save maybe ten or fifteen bucks. I always hear people say the upfront cost is too crazy to make it worth it.

Right? I had the same reaction when my neighbor told me about hers. I finally switched to a heat pump unit last year and my electric bill dropped from $130 to about $80 in the summer months alone. I was just hoping to break even in maybe five years but at this rate it'll pay itself off in like two and a half. The upfront cost is definitely a punch in the gut but if you can swing it the savings are real.

Whoa, $45 a month?! That's way more than I would've guessed too. I always hear the same thing about the upfront cost being nuts, but if the savings are that high, it'd probably pay for itself in a few years. My aunt told me she saved like $30 on her heating bill after she got her windows replaced, but $45 just on water heating is a whole different level.
