That old maple tree in my backyard finally gave up last week
It's funny how you don't notice small changes until they add up. That tree was probably 80 years old and gave us shade every summer since I bought this place in 2008. Last month during a windstorm, a big branch came down and smashed a chunk of my fence. I had an arborist come out (cost me $300 for the consult alone) and he told me the roots were basically dead from all the drought we've had since 2020. Three years ago I never would have thought about planting native species, but now I'm digging up the stump this weekend and putting in two oaks that actually belong here. Has anyone else had to replace old trees because of the changing weather patterns?

Local weather is weird. We had a magnolia tree that just stopped blooming after our second year of bad summer heat, even though we watered it faithfully. Ended up ripping it out and putting in a rhododendron that doesn't seem to care what the weather does.

Two whole years of watering a magnolia and it just gave up? That's brutal. I've seen trees get stubborn after a rough season or two but that's a total surrender. You probably dropped decent money on that thing just to watch it quit.

oh man the "total surrender" part hit me hard @reed.elliot lol. i had a japanese maple do the exact same thing after two years of babying it and watering it like crazy. one day it just looked at me and gave up, leaves all crispy. sucks when you put all that time and money into something and it just quits on you like that.
