I signed up for the group buy in Portland back in March because the price was right, but I figured the process would be boring paperwork. Then the installer got the wrong roof pitch on my house and wanted to charge me $600 extra for racking. The co-op organizer stepped in, pulled the original survey, and got the company to honor the quoted rate. That moment made me realize the real value was neighbors watching out for each other, not just the equipment. It changed how I view community action, it's less about big gestures and more about accountability. Has anyone else gotten stuck on a hidden fee during a group install, and how did you handle it?

Whoa, $600 for racking after they already quoted you? That's INSANE. I almost got hit with a similar trick on my install, they tried to add a $400 “permit re-submission” fee out of nowhere, even though the city approved everything weeks earlier. I only caught it because I kept a folder with every single email and screenshot of the original quote, and I literally made the sales rep explain line by line why that charge existed. He went silent for a full two minutes, then magically “found” a way to waive it.

And yeah, that silence trick is their move, I swear. They tried to slip a “system upgrade fee” into my final invoice and only caved when I pulled up the old contract on my phone right there in the driveway. Once you make them show their work line by line, those mystery charges just disappear like magic.
