Update: My town's 'green' recycling bins were actually making things worse

I found out our local program was mixing all the recycling together, which meant a lot of it got thrown out at the sorting plant. I started taking my own glass and paper to the separate drop-off center across town. After two months of doing this, I checked with the facility and they confirmed my stuff was actually getting processed. Has anyone else had to find a workaround for a broken local system?

Did the facility mention what percentage of single-stream recycling actually gets processed?

Our town spent over a million dollars on that single-stream system. I mean, to find out it's just getting trashed at the plant is kind of a gut punch. I guess I need to look up where the real drop-off is.

It's a real bummer, @vera_lewis2. My cousin works at a sorting plant and says the contamination rates can get pretty wild.
