Warning: I tried to switch to a heat pump and the install took 8 months instead of 2 weeks

Back in March I decided to replace my old gas furnace with a heat pump to cut my carbon footprint. The contractor said it would be a simple two week job. After three months of waiting on permits, then another two months for the electrical panel upgrade, and finally a month for the right refrigerant to come in stock, it got done in November. The actual install only took two days. So here is my question for everyone: is it usually this slow to get heat pumps installed, or did I just pick a bad contractor? Has anyone else dealt with delays like this?

8 months for a heat pump install is insane, I can't believe you waited that long just to get the thing running. That's basically an entire pregnancy worth of time for what should be a simple swap. The part about the refrigerant being out of stock for a whole month is wild to me too. I didn't even know typical refrigerants could be that hard to find, thought that was just a supply chain thing from a few years ago. Honestly sounds like your contractor dropped the ball hard on the permit and electrical side, those shouldn't take months each. You have way more patience than me, I would have been calling them every single day after the first month of delays.

Read somewhere that some of the new refrigerants are getting phased out like crazy and it's causing shortages everywhere. Still doesn't excuse an 8 month install though, that's just bad planning.

Called my supplier weekly until they found the refrigerant.
