A machinist buddy in Toledo made me rethink my tool offsets

I was bitching about a part that kept coming out 0.003 over on the bore, and my buddy Dave from Toledo said 'why are you still using the same wear offset for rough and finish?' It hit me that I'd been babying one number for everything for like 5 years. He showed me his setup where he splits rough and finish offsets separate, and my next run of 30 parts came out dead on. Has anyone else split their offsets like that, or am I just late to the party?

That "one number for everything" thing is exactly what got me too. Splitting rough and finish wear offsets changed my life on a job with tight tolerances, I run rough at like -0.001 and finish at -0.0035 and it just works. Do you also reset the finish offset after every few parts to account for tool growth, or are you just letting it ride?

I reset mine every 10 parts once the wear curve settles down.
