Appreciation post: Stumbled on a stat that 90% of tool chatter comes from bad feeds and speeds
I was digging through some old forum archives last night and found a guy who broke down 200 chatter failures by cause. It made me double check my last setup on a 304 stainless job and sure enough I was running 15% too fast. Has anyone else had luck tuning by just dropping feed rate instead of messing with depth?

Did you ever come across that old trick where some guys swear by adjusting the spindle speed by just 5% increments? I spent a whole Saturday once chasing a chatter on some 4140, finally found out my tool holder had a tiny burr on the collet face.

That burr on the collet face is exactly the kind of thing that drives you crazy for hours. I had a similar issue once on a Bridgeport running some 1018, where the finish kept looking like garbage no matter what I did with feeds and speeds. Pulled the holder, cleaned everything, still no good. Finally swapped to a different holder from the rack and bam, perfect finish. Turns out the old holder had a tiny ding on the taper that you could barely feel with your fingernail but it was enough to let the tool wobble. So my question is when you found that burr did you just stone it off or did you send the holder back to be reground? Some guys try to fix it themselves and it works for a while but I never trust that fix long term on a tight tolerance job.
