Debate: Should we still use G-code or switch to conversational programming?

I was at a shop in Grand Rapids last spring doing a 30-part run on a Haas VF-2. The old timer next to me swore G-code was the only way to get perfect tolerances, but the new guy finished his parts in half the time using conversational. Now I'm stuck wondering which actually gives better results for tight tolerance work. Anyone found one method clearly wins for a specific job type?

Tbh this reminds me of how people argue about manual vs automatic transmissions in cars. The manual purists swear you get more control and feel the road better, but you see guys in automatics zipping past them on the highway every day. For G-code vs conversational it's the same thing. If you're doing the same few parts over and over and need absolute control, G-code is like driving stick in the mountains. But for quick one off jobs or simple parts, conversational gets the job done faster and just as accurate. The real pattern I see is people getting stuck on tradition instead of picking the right tool for the job at hand.

Man I had the exact same thought when I read that. I used to be one of those G-code purists, spending hours tweaking every line for a simple round hole. Then my buddy showed me how he programs a part in conversational while I was still typing M-codes. Felt like watching someone drive past me in an automatic while I was still grinding gears. The manual guys will never admit it but sometimes the conversation is just the faster, smarter way to get it done.

The whole "stuck on tradition" part really hit home for me. I used to be the same way with my old haas at my shop, swore by G-code for everything. Then I had a rush job where I had to make a simple bracket and my machine was down, so I used a buddy's machine with conversational. I had the part done and running before I would have even finished typing out the tool change lines. It wasn't about one being better, it just saved me a ton of time that day. Your mileage may vary but that experience made me less of a purist for sure.
