Old timer told me to slow my feed rate on stainless and it saved my inserts
I was blowing through carbide inserts every 30 parts on a 304 job last month. A guy with 40 years in walked by my machine and said "you're running way too aggressive on that curve, drop it by 20 percent and let the chip thin out." I changed my feed from 0.008 to 0.006 per tooth and suddenly my insert life jumped to 120 parts per edge. Has anyone else had a simple feed adjustment like that fix a tool life problem?

Hang on, did you check if your toolpaths were creating a constant chip load or if they were letting that chip thin out naturally on the curves? Because dropping the feed by 20 percent is one thing, but on a radius or a corner the actual chip thickness can get pretty thin and then you're just rubbing the hell out of the insert anyway. Did the old timer mention anything about adjusting your radial engagement or just the raw feed number?

Did the old timer also mention anything about your radial engagement or did he just give you that feed number? I had a similar thing on a 316 shaft with a long reach endmill, dropping feed from .007 to .005 per tooth made the tool go from chattering and eating edges to running smooth for a whole shift. Sometimes it really is that simple.

Oh absolutely, that right there is the kind of advice that saves you a headache and a lot of money. I had a similar thing on some 304L flanges where I was burning through coated carbide like crazy, maybe 25 parts per edge. A guy I used to work with told me to drop my feed by about 15 percent and also change my radial stepover to keep the chip load more even. My tool life jumped to around 90 parts per edge and I didn't have to change inserts mid-shift anymore. It's wild how such a small tweak can make all the difference once you stop fighting the material.
