Overheard a new guy say 'I just eyeball the offsets' and had to bite my tongue

Told me he's been running production parts for two weeks without checking his G54 shift after a tool change, so after I showed him how to verify with an indicator we found he was off by .018 on 40 parts, anyone else have horror stories about new operators skipping setup checks?

Honestly, .018 is barely anything for most production work, people act like he scrapped a whole batch.

Wait, hold up. "Barely anything"? For real? On a high end production machine that's supposed to hold +/-.001? That's a mile off. One bad setup and you scrap a whole run of parts. I've seen a .005 screwup cost a shop a whole weekend. .018 is like crashing the spindle, not a tool change.

Had a .015 overshoot once, caught it before the next part loaded.
