Rant: My finish quality epiphany after a week of bad parts

Coolant flow was the silent killer all along.

Yeah, the coolant flow thing is huge. I read a machining forum post where a guy tracked his bad surface finish to a clogged line, even though the pump pressure looked fine. He said the chips weren't getting washed away, so they got re-cut and messed up the part.

But is coolant flow really that big of a deal?

Oh man, I was totally in that same boat! I used to just watch the pressure gauge and call it good. Then I had a run of parts with this weird, almost torn finish. Turns out one of the lines was barely trickling out, even with good pump pressure. It wasn't pushing the chips out of the cut, just letting them stick around and get chewed up again. That was a real eye opener for me.

Pressure's fine, but volume's what moves the chips.
