Shoutout to the guy who pointed out my tool offset was off by a hair

I was running a job last Tuesday on a Haas VF-2, cutting some 6061 aluminum parts for a customer order. The finish kept coming out kinda rough, but I figured it was just the tool wearing down or something. Then this older operator, Mike, walked by and asked if I checked my tool offset after the last tool change. I told him yeah, but he pointed at the readout and said look closer. Turns out my Z offset was 0.003 inches off from what I set it to. That tiny bit was making my cutter hit wrong and leaving those marks. I felt like an idiot because I've been doing this for 2 years and never caught that habit. Anyone else have a moment where a simple setup check saved a whole batch?

Used to think close enough was good enough but that tiny measurement really puts things in perspective huh? Have you adjusted everything yet?

Three thousandths of an inch is basically a whole new hobby if you ask me. At least you caught it before it turned into a full scale disaster like my kitchen cabinet saga last year. Silver lining is you're probably the most precise person in the room now.
