That $80 touch probe I bought off eBay was a gamble that paid off
Picked up a used touch probe for my mill last month, figured even if it was junk I was only out $80. Took some fiddling to get the macros right, but now I'm setting up parts in half the time. Anyone else run aftermarket probes or do you stick with the brand name stuff?

I read a forum post last week where a guy tested three different cheap probes against a Renishaw and the cheap ones were within half a thou every time. That sealed it for me. Your $80 find sounds like the same kind of deal. I got lucky with a used one off a machine that was being scrapped, had to rewire the connector but it works fine. The brand name stuff is nice, but for hobby work the price difference is just too much. It's mostly about getting the probe length right in your tool table so the offsets don't drift.
