The old timer who told me to stop using coolant on aluminum
Guy named Ray over at the shop in Toledo spent 30 years running mills. I was cutting some 6061 and had the coolant blasting like I always did. He walked over and shut the valve. Said 'dry, with a sharp insert, you'll get a better finish and no gummy mess.' I thought he was nuts. Tried it on the next part, and yeah, the chips came off clean and the surface looked way better. Took me about 4 hours of fiddling to trust it on thicker cuts though. Anyone else run aluminum dry or is that just a Midwest thing?
