Mentoring a 12 year old made me rethink my spaghetti code

My neighbor's kid asked me to help with his first Python project and he kept asking why I named variables stuff like 'x1' and 'temp2'. He said my code looked like I was trying to hide a secret message, which honestly stung a little. Has anyone else had a beginner point out something obvious that shifted how you write? What did they say?
