Finally dialed in a pour over after 3 years of trying
Last Tuesday morning I had some free time before work and decided to give pour over coffee another shot. I've been trying on and off since 2021 with a cheap ceramic dripper from Target. This time I got a gooseneck kettle on sale for $25 and watched a few videos from a barista in Portland. My first cup actually came out smooth with no bitter taste. Anyone else find that a tiny equipment change made a huge difference for them?

Cracked a joke to myself about how I've spent three years making what tastes like burnt regret water, then one gooseneck kettle fixes everything. Honestly, your story sounds like my coffee journey except my cheap ceramic dripper is from a thrift store and still has a mysterious yellow stain on it. I tried for two years with a regular kettle and got nothing but bitter disappointment every single time. Picked up a used gooseneck at a garage sale for like five bucks and suddenly my morning cup doesn't taste like I'm punishing myself for something. Isn't it wild how something that small can make you feel like you finally cracked a secret code or something?

fifteen dollars on amazon and a regular electric kettle works exactly the same for me though. i honestly think people overthink this stuff way too much. my coffee tastes fine and i just dump water in however it comes out.

Is it really that serious though? I mean, if it tastes fine to you then who cares what kettle you use. People act like a gooseneck kettle is some magical fix for bad coffee, but at the end of the day, it's just hot water hitting grounds. I've made perfectly good coffee with a $10 Mr. Coffee drip machine and tap water that's been sitting in the thing for two days. Not saying your experience isn't real, but maybe the coffee you were making before was just bad for other reasons. Sometimes people convince themselves a new gadget changed everything when really they just started paying more attention.
