Found out my cheap blade grinder spins at 20,000 RPM and that's why my pour overs tasted muddy
I was reading a review on a coffee forum last Tuesday and the guy measured his blade grinder with a tachometer, got about 20,000 RPM, and explained that speed basically pulverizes the beans into dust and chunks at the same time. I tested it myself with a $12 sieve from the grocery store and over half my grind was fines that clogged the filter and made every cup taste bitter and flat. Switched to a hand grinder I borrowed from my neighbor and the same beans suddenly tasted like actual blueberries. So for anyone still fighting their blade grinder, have you tried sifting out the dust or did you just give up like I almost did?
20,000 RPM from a $20 blade grinder is INSANE to me. I always just figured mine chopped the beans "good enough" and the real problem was my pour technique. But the part that got me was you saying OVER HALF your grind was fines, that's basically dust at that point and of course it's gonna clog the filter and taste bitter. Sifting with a cheap grocery sieve is such a simple test too, I can't believe I never thought to just LOOK at what the grinder was actually doing. A neighbor's hand grinder turning the same beans into blueberries says everything about how much the grind matters. I almost threw my pour over setup in the trash over this and probably would have blamed myself forever.
