Hot take: I used to buy pre-ground coffee from the grocery store every time

For years I just grabbed whatever bag of pre-ground was on sale at the Safeway in Denver. Then last month I picked up a $20 hand grinder on a whim and started grinding beans right before brewing. The difference hit me on the third sip of my morning cup, way more flavor and less bitterness. Now I can't go back, even for convenience. Anyone else notice how much faster your coffee goes stale once it's ground?

The "less bitterness" part is exactly why I actually prefer pre-ground for my cold brew.

That whole bitterness thing is why I got really into chicory a few years back. My grandma used to mix it into her pre-ground stuff for iced coffee and swore it mellowed everything out. I tried it myself and honestly she was right, it adds this weird little smoothness that just works. Now I keep a jar of it in the pantry just for cold brew season.

Started keeping a bag of chicory in my freezer after reading this, honestly never thought to try it with cold brew. My neighbor swears by it in her hot coffee too, says it takes the edge off those cheap supermarket roasts. Maybe I'm late to the game but I'm excited to see if it actually makes my morning batch less bitter.
