I finally weighed my beans for a week and I'm not sure it was worth it
Side A says a $12 scale and 1 gram of accuracy turned their sour Ethiopian into something a cafe in Portland would charge $7 for, side B says they've been eyeballing the same scoop for 4 years and their coffee tastes the same as always, so which one of us is actually fooling ourselves?
My uncle ran a diner for 22 years and he'd fill the coffee basket by dumping grounds in until it "looked right," then level it with his finger. Every single pot. I asked him once why he never weighed it and he said the regulars would riot if the coffee ever changed. So maybe the scoop people aren't fooling themselves, they just don't want the cup to move.
