My neighbor in apartment 4B saw my French press and asked if I ever just use instant for the speed.

He said 'sometimes the ritual is the point, not the drink,' and now I'm wondering if my whole setup is more about the 10 minutes of quiet in the morning than the actual coffee itself.

Isn't it funny how someone else can point out something so obvious about your own routine? Your neighbor is totally right. I have this whole pour-over thing I do, and yeah, the coffee is good, but the main thing is that it forces me to just stand there and wait for the water to drip through. It's like a built-in pause button for my brain before the day starts. I get what @victorh81 is saying too, because that quiet time is what makes the drink feel special. If I just slammed some instant, I'd miss that whole calm feeling. The ritual is the whole point for me now.

Why does it have to be one or the other? The quiet time is part of the drink.

Exactly. I make my coffee and just sit with it for ten minutes before I even look at my phone. That first sip is different when you wait.
