Spent $80 on a fancy coffee bean subscription and got burned

Signed up for this premium single-origin subscription from a roaster in Austin. Every bag was roasted way too dark, tasted like ash. Anyone else had luck with a subscription that actually sends light roasts?

Feel your pain. I tried a subscription from a roaster in Portland that was supposed to be light but every bag came out oily and bitter. Best luck I've had is finding a local shop that posts their roast dates and buying straight from their website instead.

honestly @oliverhernandez i'm gonna disagree here. i've had way better luck with subscriptions than local shops, at least in my area. my local places never seem to know when their beans were roasted, it's all vague "within the last week" stuff vs the subscription i use ships same day and has exact dates. portland roasters though yeah some of them are overhyped. had a bag from one that was labeled light roast but looked like dark chocolate chips almost. that's just bad quality control not a subscription problem. i think the key is finding a sub that actually cares about consistency. i use one from a place in chicago and their light roasts are actually light with no oil. local shops around me just don't have the same volume to rotate stock as fast.
