Can we talk about the time a cashier made me rethink my whole grocery routine

I used to always buy the store brand stuff without thinking, figured it was all the same. Then last month at the Piggly Wiggly in Greenville, this older cashier named Rita rang up my cart and said 'you know that off brand ketchup has high fructose corn syrup, right?' She didn't even sound mean, just matter of fact. I stood there for a second realizing I'd been telling myself for years that brand names were just a scam, but I never actually checked the labels. Has anyone else had a random stranger drop a truth bomb like that?

OH man that story about Rita hits different. I had a UPS driver once tell me that the "energy efficient" lightbulbs I was buying actually contained mercury and I needed to be careful with disposal, completely derailed my whole eco-friendly shopping kick for a month. It's crazy how one random comment from someone who just sees stuff all day can totally flip your assumptions.

derailed my whole eco-friendly shopping kick" seems a bit dramatic over a lightbulb.

And @holly_reed55 you're right that 'derailed' is dramatic, but isn't it funny how one tiny fact from a random person can make you question a whole habit you thought was solid. It's like we walk around with these assumptions and never really check them until someone just drops a truth in our lap.
