Friend in Seattle called me out for ordering takeout from a place that uses plastic clamshells

I always tell myself I care about the environment, but there I was last Thursday standing outside Chipotle with a bag full of containers I knew would end up in a landfill, and my buddy just looked at the bag and asked 'so this is the part of your values you don't think about?'

Does your friend offer to pick up the to-go containers from your place and wash them out for recycling? Seattle has composting rules for those clamshells anyway, so he's eating takeout too. We all use plastic sometimes, nobody is perfect on this stuff. Give him a little slack and yourself some too.

My neighbor goes through this same thing with his brother-in-law. They have this unspoken competition about who's greener and it just creates tension every holiday dinner. @dakotab93 is right that we all use plastic sometimes. I've noticed people get so focused on judging one person's takeout container that they forget about the bigger picture of systemic waste. It would probably help everyone to just acknowledge we're all doing our best with what we have.
