Honestly, I used to think you had to be a total expert to have an opinion on anything. Then I tried to explain my own job to my nephew last year and realized I was wrong about half of it.

Yeah, that's a big one. I used to be the same way, like you needed a degree or ten years of experience before you could even open your mouth. But trying to explain something simple, like you said, really shows you where the gaps are. It makes you realize that knowing how to do a thing is totally different from knowing how it actually works. Now I figure if you've spent any time at all with a topic, your take is worth something, even if it's just to point out what's confusing.

My cousin tried to explain his IT job to our grandma last Thanksgiving. He said the internet was "like a series of tubes" and she nodded like it made perfect sense. Meanwhile, I'm over here realizing I couldn't even tell you how my own wifi works. It's wild how much we just accept without really knowing.
