I argued with my dad for years about the 'right' way to split firewood.

He always insisted on using a maul and brute force, but after my shoulder gave out last fall in Bozeman, I finally tried a hydraulic splitter. The work got done in an hour, not a day, and the wood was just as good. So why did I cling to the harder way for so long just because it felt more 'authentic'?

You know, that "authentic" feeling you mentioned is the whole point for some of us. That hour with the splitter is efficient, but the day with the maul is the actual task. It's not about the wood being good, it's about the quiet work and the earned rest. My shoulder would probably agree with you, but my mind still likes the slower way.

Exactly. The work itself is the reward.

But what if the quiet work is the point, @spencer_owens58?
