My neighbor said he'd never hire a woman to fix his roof

I was getting my mail yesterday and heard him telling another guy that women just aren't strong enough for roofing work. The thing is, the crew that re-did my garage roof last spring was led by a woman named Sam, and they were the fastest, cleanest crew I've ever seen. It made my head spin hearing him say that right after I'd had such a good experience. Has anyone else had a moment like this where someone's strong opinion just didn't match what you saw with your own eyes?

Sounds like your neighbor hasn't met Sam. Some people just cling to old ideas even when the proof is right over their heads.

Is this really something to get worked up about? People say stuff like that all the time and it's just not worth the energy. Your roof got fixed well, that's all that matters in the end. Let the guy have his outdated ideas while you enjoy your solid garage.

My uncle in Ohio still refuses to use his bank's website because he doesn't trust "the computer" with his money. It's the same thing. People get a fixed idea in their head about how the world works, and then every new fact just bounces right off. You see it with tech, with food, with how houses get built. The roof is fixed and dry, but that guy's mind is still stuck in 1998. It's easier for him to be wrong than to change his story.
