My neighbor's silence made me think they hated me. | Cognitive Dissonance Diaries

Turns out they were grieving and I made it worse.

Have you ever tried just leaving a small note? I did that when my coworker was super quiet for weeks... turned out her dad was sick. I wrote 'Hey, no need to reply, but I'm here if you want to talk.' It didn't fix everything, but it eased the tension. Sometimes people just need to know you see them without pressure.

At my last job, notes like that made things awkward. A simple 'thinking of you' is less pressure. Honestly, just being normal helps most.

My old roommate's quiet month taught me we often miss the real stories behind silence.

You know, that note idea is sweet, but sometimes even a low-pressure offer can feel heavy when someone's deep in grief (like, they might worry about letting you down by not replying). Maybe just a simple 'thinking of you' without any expectation to connect could be softer.
