My uncle swore by WD-40 on sticky cabinet hinges, but after three months they all gummed up again.

He told me to spray them every few weeks and now I'm scraping off this sticky residue from all 14 hinges in my kitchen, has anyone else had this backfire on them?

Honestly I read somewhere that WD-40 isn't really a lubricant for long term use. It's more of a cleaner and moisture displacer. My buddy at the hardware store told me it dries out and gets tacky after a while because the solvents evaporate. That's probably why it gummed up on you after three months. You might be better off with a silicone spray or some white lithium grease for hinges. Sorry you gotta scrape all that off though, that sounds like a pain.

Got a buddy who did the same thing on his garage door tracks. He was spraying WD-40 on them every month and after a year they were so gunked up the door would barely move. He ended up having to take the whole track apart and scrub it with degreaser. Ever try that silicone lube instead?

My neighbor did this exact thing on his garage door tracks last year, and it was a total nightmare. He'd been using that cheap spray silicone from the auto parts store and it just built up this thick, sticky residue that collected every bit of dust and dirt from the garage. I had to help him pull the whole track section off and we spent a whole Saturday scrubbing it down with a degreaser and a stiff brush. Ended up switching to a dry lube with PTFE in it, the kind that doesn't leave any wet film behind. The door slides so much smoother now and we haven't touched it in six months. Honestly, anything that stays wet on the tracks is just gonna turn into a mess eventually.
