Pro tip: the old timer at the tire shop told me to stop rotating my own tires and he was dead right
So about a year ago I was at a tire shop in Amarillo getting a slow leak patched, and this older guy behind the counter watched me mention I rotate my own tires in my driveway to save $40. He looked at me and said "son, you're probably torquing them in the air and calling it done." I laughed it off because I've been doing my own work since I was 16. Fast forward to a road trip two weeks ago and I'm on the shoulder of I-40 with a lug nut that walked itself loose and chewed up the stud on my front wheel. Turns out he was right, I was snugging everything up with the wheel off the ground and never re-checking it once the truck came down. That one dumb habit cost me a $180 tow plus a $65 stud replacement, way more than the rotations I was dodging. I went back and told the guy he was right and he just nodded like he already knew. Now I'm wondering how many other shortcuts I've been patting myself on the back for. Anybody else get humbled by a throwaway comment from a stranger who knew your job better than you did?
