Rant: That organic grocery store in Portland made me feel fake
I walked into New Seasons Market last week bragging to my friend about how I only buy local produce. Then I grabbed a bag of chips from the snack aisle without even checking the label, and it was made in a factory in Ohio. My friend just looked at me and laughed. Has anyone else caught themselves acting one way in public and doing the total opposite when nobody's watching?

Ha, classic. We all do that stuff more than we want to admit. I think the whole "local and organic" thing becomes kind of a costume we put on when we're around people who care about that stuff. Then you get home and crush a bag of whatever's cheapest and tastes good like the rest of us. Portland's just got a special way of making you feel guilty about it.

Are we really acting like eating chips from Ohio instead of Oregon is some kind of moral crisis? The whole "I only buy local" act usually crumbles the second you actually have to feed yourself on a normal day. Your friend got a laugh out of it, so maybe it's just not that deep.

@sean_cooper58 calling it a 'costume' really got me. Wait, Ohio? Like everything else that comes out of that state is processed and shipped cross-country? I just picture some guy in a factory laughing while we pretend we're pure farm-to-table people.
