Shoutout to the $4 notebook from Walgreens that fixed my budget after my $70 app did nothing
Last June I downloaded a fancy budgeting app for $70 a year because everyone at my office swore by it, and I still had no clue where my money went each month. Then my sister handed me a plain $4 notebook from Walgreens and said write down every single purchase the second you make it, no categories, no charts. I did it for 8 weeks and caught $212 in dumb little charges I never would've noticed, mostly DoorDash and one gym I forgot to cancel in 2022. The app let me set up pretty pie charts I never looked at, but the notebook forced me to actually stare at my own spending. So my belief that better tech equals better results got wrecked by a spiral notebook, has anyone else had a cheap analog thing beat the app they were paying for?
The part about the notebook making you actually stare at your spending hits home. I did the same thing with a $2 index card in my wallet where I wrote every swipe for a month, and it caught way more than the $12 app I had been using. Honestly seeing my own handwriting next to dumb buys like three coffees in one day did more than any pie chart ever could.
