I yelled about respecting food while tossing a full plate myself.

Yeah that whole "do as I say, not as I do" thing hits hard during dinner. I mean I once gave a big speech about wasted food while angrily scraping my own untouched spaghetti into the trash. The mental image of myself yelling about respect with a full plate in hand is pretty much my brand of parenting.

That automatic pilot mode hits every parent at some point. We get so focused on teaching the lesson that we miss our own actions in the moment. Kids are sharp, they see the gap between the rule and the example right away. It's a rough way to learn that they often copy what we do, not what we say. My own brand is probably getting annoyed about phones at the table while checking a notification.
