Told my sponsor at the Tuesday meeting in Kalamazoo that I go to bars to 'test' myself, he said one thing that hit hard
For about 8 months I kept telling myself I was going to these bars just to prove I could be around it without drinking. My sponsor asked how many times I'd actually done that versus how many times I stayed for one soda and left. It was 2 out of like 30 trips. I sat in my car in the parking lot on Portage Road for 45 minutes after that meeting doing the math. The weird part is I didn't even want to drink most of those nights, I just liked the feeling of being the guy who could handle it. He said 'you're not testing your sobriety, you're feeding your story.' Has anyone else caught themselves doing a thing for the wrong reason and only noticed when somebody else said it out loud?
Did a buddy of mine do the same thing with "just driving past" his old liquor store every day? Took his wife pointing out he was taking the long way home for him to see it.
