Used to save every cardboard box 'just in case' now I toss them same day

For years I kept every amazon box and shoe box piled up in my garage. I told myself I might need them for shipping or storage. Then I had to haul 20 boxes to the dump after they got wet and moldy last spring. Now I break them down and recycle them within a week of getting a package. Anyone else finally break that hoarding habit?

Man I noticed the same thing with old phone chargers and random cables a few months back. It's like we all have this little voice saying "you might need this someday" but then you never actually do. Getting rid of stuff is kind of freeing once you start lol.

My uncle taught me something interesting about this. He worked in logistics for 30 years and said cardboard boxes are actually one of the worst things to store because they attract silverfish and cockroaches. The glue and paper fibers break down over time and create this perfect little ecosystem for bugs. Ever since he told me that, I break down boxes the same day. I had a neighbor who kept boxes for years and ended up with a silverfish infestation that spread to their books and clothes. Now I recycle everything within a week and my garage stays clean and pest free.

My grandma had a whole room full of boxes she was saving for "someday" and we found mouse droppings in half of them when we cleaned it out. It's crazy how something that seems harmless can turn into a big problem if you just let it sit.
