A single comment about my comic book stacking changed everything
I used to just pile my floppies horizontally in short stacks on my shelf. A guy at my local shop in Portland saw me doing it and said 'you're gonna ruin the spines doing that, you gotta stand them up with backing boards.' I switched to standing them upright with boards and bags on all my books from the last 2 years. The difference is huge, no more bent corners or spine roll. Has anyone else gotten a simple tip like that that completely changed how you store your collection?

The concrete floor thing is no joke, I read an article about how basements can have humidity issues that warp cardboard boxes over time. @olivia_moore mentioned keeping them off the floor, and that really stuck with me. I had a buddy lose a whole run of 90s X-Men to moisture damage because his long box sat on a concrete slab for a year. Since then I've got all my boxes up on cheap wire shelves, even my short boxes. It's a pain to set up but way better than finding mold on your books later. What kind of shelving are you using for your collection now?

Wait until you hear what I learned about long boxes. A buddy at the shop told me to keep them off the floor because moisture can seep up through concrete and warp the bottom books. That tip saved a bunch of my older issues that were sitting in a basement. Also, those short boxes are way better for your back than the long ones when you gotta move them around. Little things like that really do make a difference over time.

That bit about moisture from concrete floors is wild, how much damage did you actually see?

Oh man, the concrete floor thing is so real. I went a step further and put those cheap plastic shelf risers under my long boxes too, just to get that extra inch of airflow underneath. It seems dumb but it really does keep the bottoms dry if you're in a basement or garage situation.
