Found a cheap way to keep my comics from getting sun damage on my shelf

I have a big shelf of comics in my living room that gets direct sun in the afternoon. I noticed the spines on a few of my favorite books, like my old 'Amazing Spider-Man' run, were starting to fade after about six months. I tried moving the shelf, but the only other wall was too damp. I saw UV blocking film online, but it was like $80 for a roll. My trick was to buy a pack of those cheap black poster boards from the dollar store for $5. I cut them to size and taped them to the back of each shelf, so they stick up a few inches above the books. It blocks the light without making the room dark and you can't even see the boards from the front. Has anyone else found a good, low cost fix for this kind of problem?

Worry about the tape like @matthewdixon said, but that's a solid fix. I used old cardboard from shipping boxes for the same thing, just cut strips and slid them behind the books. My friend went full nerd and measured the light with a cheap meter from a hardware store, found out his blinds blocked most of it already. Your way is smarter than my other buddy who just draped a towel over the whole shelf and called it a day.

Your poster board trick is clever, but have you checked if the tape adhesive could damage the shelf over time?

Actually thought the tape was fine until my shelf got sticky.

Did you try rubbing alcohol on mine for that sticky residue, or am I just bad at shelf care?
