Heads up, I just saw a stat that only 12% of comic shop customers are women, according to a survey from ComicsPro

Honestly, that number seems pretty normal for a hobby store. Comic shops are niche, and a lot of their stock is aimed at a core audience that's been mostly guys for decades. It's not about keeping anyone out, it's just what sells to the regulars. Trying to force a big change might just turn off the existing customers who keep these small shops open. The market is what it is.

But what if the regulars themselves are changing what they want?

Jamie's point about the regulars is fair, but it misses how the regulars themselves are changing. @ivanscott is onto something there. A lot of guys who grew up on superhero comics are now reading manga or graphic novels with their kids. The core audience isn't static. Shops that only stock the same old superhero floppies are catering to a shrinking part of that old crowd. The market is what it is because shops keep ordering for the customer they had twenty years ago, not the one walking in now.
