I thought the 'collector mentality' was just about hoarding, but my local shop's 'Free Comic Book Day' event totally changed my mind.

That older collector at the shop nailed it. I had a similar shift about ten years back when I finally sold off three long boxes of books I never looked at. It cleared space for the runs I truly love, like the original Moon Knight series. @stone.lisa is right about the stack in the closet feeling different when you see it that way. The hunt is more fun when you're after a specific story that means something to you, not just the next issue to fill a hole. It turns a pile of paper into a real collection with a point.

Yeah, that "collector mentality" thing. My buddy went to one of those events just for the free stuff, but ended up talking to this older guy about a specific Spider-Man run for like an hour. He said it wasn't about owning boxes of comics anymore, it was about knowing the stories and the history behind them. He came home with two issues he actually wanted to read, not just stack in a corner.

Totally get what your buddy found, @iris927. I used to be the worst about just grabbing any old comic to fill a box, thinking a full set was the whole point. Hearing about that talk with the older collector really shifts the focus. It makes the hobby about the actual stories and the people who love them, not just the stuff you own. That's a way better reason to pick up a couple issues, because you'll actually enjoy them. Changes how I see my own stack of books in the closet now.
